Solar Panels FAQ — UK Homeowners' Guide

Answers to the most common questions about solar panel installation, costs, grants, and the Smart Export Guarantee in the UK.

Costs & Value

How much do solar panels cost in the UK in 2026?

A 4kW system (suitable for an average 3-bedroom house) costs £5,000–£7,000 fully installed by an MCS-certified engineer, including VAT at 5%. Smaller 2–3kW systems start from around £3,500.

Are solar panels worth it in the UK?

Yes for most homeowners with a suitable roof. Average annual savings are £500–£700 on electricity bills, plus Smart Export Guarantee payments. Typical payback is 8–12 years on a system that lasts 25+ years.

What is the average monthly electricity bill with solar panels?

Solar panels typically reduce your bill by 30–60% depending on your usage habits and system size. A household paying £120/month might reduce this to £50–£80/month with a 4kW system.

How long is the payback period for solar panels UK?

Typically 8–12 years for a standard residential installation, after which the savings are essentially profit. With electricity prices at ~28p/kWh (2026), payback is faster than a decade ago.

Does adding solar panels increase house value?

Research suggests solar panels typically add 0.5–3% to property value and can speed up a sale, as buyers value lower running costs.

How much can I save on my energy bills with solar panels?

Most 3–4 bed households save £500–£700/year on electricity bills. Adding battery storage can increase this to £700–£1,000/year by storing unused daytime generation.

Installation & Technical

How many solar panels do I need for my home?

A typical 3-bedroom house needs 10–12 panels (4kW system). A 2-bed flat might need 6–8 panels (2–3kW). The exact number depends on your roof size, electricity usage, and panel efficiency.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels UK?

Most residential solar installations are permitted development and don't require planning permission. Exceptions apply to listed buildings, conservation areas, and panels that project more than 200mm above the roof plane.

What is the best angle for solar panels in the UK?

The optimal tilt angle in the UK is 30–40 degrees from horizontal. South-facing roofs produce the most energy. Southeast/southwest-facing roofs typically achieve 80–90% of the output of due south.

Can solar panels be installed on a flat roof?

Yes. Flat roof installations use angled mounting frames to tilt the panels at the optimal angle. They can be highly effective, especially for commercial properties.

Can I install solar panels myself (DIY)?

DIY installation is technically possible for some off-grid systems, but grid-connected solar panels must be installed by an MCS-certified engineer for safety, building regulations compliance, and to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee.

What are plug-in / balcony solar panels?

Plug-in (or balcony) solar panels are small systems (200–800W) that connect directly to a standard plug socket. They don't require planning permission or a certified installer, but output is limited. They're popular for flats and renters.

How long do solar panels last?

Quality solar panels carry a 25–30 year performance warranty and typically last even longer. Performance degrades by approximately 0.3–0.5% per year. After 25 years, panels typically still produce around 87–90% of their original output.

How much electricity does a solar panel produce per day?

A single 400W panel in the UK produces roughly 0.8–1.4 kWh per day on average across the year (less in winter, more in summer). A 10-panel (4kW) system produces around 8–14 kWh/day.

Grants & Government Schemes

What solar panel grants are available in the UK in 2026?

The main schemes are: ECO4 (free panels for qualifying low-income households), the Smart Export Guarantee (payments for excess electricity), and Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan (up to £7,500 grant + £9,000 loan). Some councils also offer LA Flex funding.

Can I get free solar panels from the government?

Yes, if you qualify for the ECO4 scheme. Eligibility is based on means-tested benefits (Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit etc.) or a referral from your local authority. MCS and TrustMark-certified installers must be used.

What is the ECO4 scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) requires large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements for low-income households. Solar panels can be included as part of a whole-home package in some cases.

What solar grants are available in Scotland?

Home Energy Scotland offers grants of up to £7,500 and 0% loans up to £9,000 for solar PV. Warmer Homes Scotland provides free improvements for households in fuel poverty.

What grants are available in Wales for solar panels?

The Nest scheme (Warm Homes) provides free energy efficiency improvements for qualifying Welsh households. Contact Energy Saving Trust Wales for current eligibility.

What funding is available in Northern Ireland?

The Affordable Warmth Scheme and the NI Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP) offer assistance for eligible households. Contact the Housing Executive for details.

Smart Export Guarantee

What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) replaced the Feed-in Tariff in January 2020. It requires eligible energy suppliers to offer a payment for every unit (kWh) of electricity you export to the grid from your solar panels.

Which energy suppliers offer the best SEG rates?

Rates vary significantly. As of 2026, Octopus Energy's Outgoing Octopus and E.ON Next offer competitive variable rates. Check each supplier's current tariff before signing up — rates change.

How do I register for the Smart Export Guarantee?

Contact your energy supplier after your panels are installed by an MCS-certified engineer. You'll need your MCS certificate and a smart meter or export meter. You don't have to use the same supplier as your import tariff.

How much can I earn from the Smart Export Guarantee?

At typical rates and for an average 4kW system exporting ~1,700 kWh/year, SEG earnings range from £85–£255/year depending on the tariff rate (5–15p/kWh).
